FAQ's for Counselling with Parent Perspective
If something feels difficult or unresolved, you don't have to go through it alone. At Parent Perspective, I offer a compassionate and confidential space for you to feel heard and be understood, so you can understand yourself more deeply. Here are some frequently asked questions that may help you. If your question is not covered, please get in touch.
What is counselling?
Counselling with Parent Perspective provides a specialist confidential space where you can express your emotions without fear of judgement. It can help you reflect on your emotions, relationships and challenges with a trained professional. Together you can build coping skills, make sense of difficult experiences and reconnect with yourself.
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. You may access it if you feel overwhelmed, stuck or simply want a safe space to think.
What is integrative counselling?
Parent Perspective uses integrative counselling, which means your therapy is tailored to you, rather than using a standardised approach. A range of therapeutic approaches is considered, including person-centred counselling, psychodynamic, attachment-focused work, compassion-based approaches, and practical tools for managing anxiety and emotional overwhelm.
This means we can explore both your current situations and feelings, and delve into past experiences, relationships, or patterns that may influence how you feel.
Do I need a diagnosis to access counselling?
No. At Parent Perspective you do not need a diagnosis to access counselling, nor do you need to feel that your problem is "big enough" to access support.
Counselling may be helpful if you are: feeling low, anxious, or emotionally overwhelmed (including postnatal depression and postnatal anxiety); feeling stressed or burnt out; feeling stuck, lost, or disconnected from yourself; adjusting to a major life change; processing difficult experiences such as birth trauma; navigating relationship challenges; carrying feelings that feel hard to talk about elsewhere; or wanting a space that is just for you.
You don't need to wait until things feel unbearable. It can be valuable to reach out before that point.
Do I need to know exactly what I want to talk about?
You don't need to know what to say or arrive with clarity, just a willingness to begin.
How long does counselling take?
I offer both long and short term counselling. How long your counselling takes depends on your individual circumstances. Short term counselling is likely to relate to a specific topic, whereas longer term counselling is likely to explore deeper feelings and patterns or a variety of topics. The goal of your counselling can be reviewed regularly and it may evolve over time to suit your needs.
How often are sessions?
Sessions can be weekly or fortnightly depending on your individual circumstances.
Are sessions online or in person?
Sessions are available online via secure video link, enabling you to access counselling from the privacy of your own home. Online counselling is particularly useful for balancing work, parenting, pregnancy and for those with limited time and energy.
What if I feel nervous or uncomfortable talking?
It is completely understandable to feel nervous about talking. Opening up can feel vulnerable, especially if you have been used to managing things on your own. There is no pressure to share more than what feels comfortable, and silence is ok too. We will move at your own pace to create a safe space for you to speak freely.
How much do sessions cost and how do I book a session?
Each session costs £55, or you can book 6 sessions for a discounted price. All sessions are payable in advance and you can book via the Book a Session page.
