Support before birth – FAQs
How do I know if counselling could help me when trying for a baby, through IVF or pregnancy?
Counselling can help if you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, struggling with pregnancy, worried about birth, experiencing fertility challenges or finding the emotional changes difficult. Counselling can provide a supportive and safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings.
Can I have counselling during pregnancy?
Yes. Counselling during pregnancy can help you manage anxiety, prepare emotionally for birth, cope with previous pregnancy or birth experiences, navigate relationship changes and build confidence as you prepare for parenthood.
I don't think my worries are serious enough. Should I still seek support?
You are always welcome to seek support. You don't need to reach a breaking point before asking for help. Early counselling can help you understand and process your emotions, develop coping strategies, and prevent difficulties from becoming overwhelming.
Can counselling help if I'm terrified of giving birth?
Yes it can. Fear of childbirth (tokophobia) is more common than many people realise. Together we can explore where your fears come from, develop practical coping strategies, and help you feel more informed, confident and emotionally prepared for birth.
What is the free 15 minute counselling consultation for?
I offer a free 15 minute consultation for counselling. This is an opportunity for you to find out more about what counselling offers, how we can work together to meet your goal and define a future plan for counselling before committing to weekly or fortnightly sessions.
What happens during the first counselling session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We'll talk about what's bringing you to counselling, what you're hoping to achieve, and any questions or concerns you may have. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
Everyone needs a different amount of sessions. Some prefer fewer sessions to work on a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly review your progress together and tailor the support to what feels right for you.
