Antenatal Depression - FAQs
I'm pregnant but I don't feel how I expected, how can counselling help?
Pregnancy can bring difficult emotions as well as joy. Counselling offers a safe space to talk openly about low mood, numbness, sadness, or feeling unlike yourself. If you're feeling persistently low, disconnected, overwhelmed, or struggling to enjoy things, counselling can help you explore what's going on and support you through it.
What can I talk about in counselling?
You can talk about anything that feels important to you, from low mood, anxiety, guilt, feeling emotionally numb, changes to your relationship, fears of becoming a parent or how hard things feel right now. Everything is ok to talk about in counselling.
What happens in antenatal counselling sessions?
Sessions give you a safe space to slow down, talk honestly, and begin to understand what you're feeling, with gentle support and without judgement.
I feel guilty for not enjoying pregnancy, is that normal?
Many people feel pressure to feel happy during pregnancy, which can make difficult feelings even harder to talk about. Counselling is a place where all of your emotions are welcome.
Can counselling help me feel more like myself again?
Counselling can help you reconnect with yourself, feel more supported, and navigate this stage with greater understanding and care.
What if I'm experiencing a mixture of different feelings or difficulties?
You do not need to have everything figured out before starting counselling. Many people experience a combination of anxiety, low mood, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, identity changes, overwhelm, or simply a feeling that something doesn't feel right. You can find a safe space at Parent Perspective to explore your experience without needing to label or fully understand it first.
I don't feel like myself during pregnancy or after having a baby, can counselling help even if I don't know why?
Sometimes people can sense that something has changed emotionally, mentally, or physically, even if they can't explain it clearly. You can explore gently what has changed, understand how you're feeling, and reconnect with yourself with support and compassion.
